Counseling with the Word of God

At Tumbling Shoals Baptist Church, we believe God’s Word is sufficient for all of life. Scripture provides real answers to real problems, and we are committed to offering that hope to our community.

There Is Hope for What You Are Facing

Do you feel overwhelmed and out of options? Many people struggle with anger, anxiety, bitterness, depression, guilt, or grief and wonder if things will ever change. Others have battled stubborn addictions, financial hardship, disordered eating, or chronic physical challenges for so long that hope feels distant.

We want you to know: there is genuine hope. God works through every trial to accomplish a greater good in the lives of those who seek Him. Scripture testifies to this again and again, and so do the many people who have walked through our doors.

What Is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical counseling is a ministry of God’s people to one another. It operates under the authority of Scripture and the oversight of the local church. Rather than relying on secular psychology as the foundation, biblical counseling applies God’s Word directly to the struggles of the human heart.

The Goal

Biblical counselors aim to reorient disordered desires, thoughts, and behaviors toward what God designed. Ultimately, the goal is restored fellowship with God and with others.

The Method

Counselors speak the truth in love. They comfort those who suffer and call those in sin to repentance. Throughout the process, they point counselees toward Jesus Christ as the source of lasting change.

Who Provides Counseling

Biblical counseling at TSBC is provided by Pastor Mark Williams, who is trained and certified through the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). Pastor Mark is not a licensed therapist or psychologist. He is a minister of Jesus Christ who applies Scripture to the struggles of the human heart with the goal of bringing genuine, lasting life change through God’s means.

What can I expect? You can expect three things. First, privacy: everything you share stays confidential, except in cases where Scripture or law requires otherwise, such as criminal activity. Third, encouragement: he will celebrate your growth and lovingly challenge you to think and live in ways that honor Christ.

How long does counseling take? Sessions typically last one hour per week. Most people see meaningful progress within eight to twelve sessions. New patterns take time to form, so we ask that you commit to the process.

What about medical needs? We care about your whole health. If your situation calls for it, Pastor Mark may recommend a medical evaluation. Counseling can continue alongside any medical care you receive.
